Why I Secretly Love the End of Daylight Saving Time (Yes, Really)

Every November, Idahoans collectively sigh when we set our clocks back an hour. The memes start rolling in—“It’s dark at 4:30,” “Goodbye sunshine, hello seasonal affective disorder,” “See you next spring!” But while most people mourn the early sunsets, I’ll admit it… as a real estate agent, I secretly love it. Here’s why.

twight, home at sunset, nice home,

1. Twilight Makes Every House Look Cozy

Those late-afternoon showings that used to be bathed in harsh daylight? Now they glow like a Hallmark movie. Porch lights twinkle, fireplaces flicker, and even the humblest bungalow suddenly gives off “dream home” energy. A little ambient lighting can do wonders for curb appeal—no filter required.

2. I Get to Brag About Energy-Efficient Features

Shorter days mean buyers suddenly care about good lighting. I finally get to highlight all those LED upgrades and smart thermostats without sounding like I’m auditioning for HGTV’s “Nerdy Realtor Edition.” “Oh, you noticed how bright it is in here? That’s the low-wattage recessed lighting and the reflective paint finish—fancy, right?”

3. The Coats Hide the Chaos

It’s also the one time of year when I can keep extra snacks, business cards, and 17 phone chargers in my jacket pockets without judgment. Those puffy Idaho winter coats are basically mobile offices. Need a pen? A lockbox key? Possibly a small flashlight? I’ve got you covered—literally.

cozy drinks, coffee art, fancy coffee

4. Coffee Feels Like a Lifestyle Choice

When the sun sets at 4:37 p.m., an afternoon latte isn’t indulgent—it’s survival. My favorite local coffee shops (looking at you, Push & Pour and Flying M) become my second office, and there’s something about holding a hot drink during a showing that just feels right. Like I’m starring in my own cozy real estate documentary.

5. Early Darkness = Earlier Pajamas

Once the last showing wraps and the “SOLD” signs are snug for the night, I can head home guilt-free. Dinner at 5? Pajamas at 6? Watching Zillow listings in bed by 7? It’s not laziness—it’s seasonal efficiency.

6. The Clients Get Serious

When the clock falls back, the casual shoppers fade and the serious buyers come out. Maybe it’s the chill in the air or the approaching holidays, but people suddenly realize they want to be settled before Santa arrives. And nothing warms a Realtor’s heart like motivated buyers.

So yes, while the rest of Idaho may be lighting candles and counting down the days until March, I’ll be out there happily showing homes by porch light and sipping peppermint mochas like it’s a sport.

Because when it comes to real estate—and daylight—there’s always a bright side.
